Sex Therapy
I am in training as a sex and relationship therapist at the Institute of Psychosexual Psychotherapy.
In this capacity I am able to offer therapy for sexual issues to individuals or couples.
I am a student member of the College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists and I am bound to comply with their rules and ethical guidelines.
Individual sex therapy
I can help with any of these sexual issues:
Erections - difficulty getting or maintaining an erection and how this may impact a relationship, the fear of not being able to perform, how stress and anxiety can exasperate the problem, how age and health can affect the erection
Ejaculation - issues with premature ejaculation or delayed ejaculation, how anxiety about performance can impact ejaculations
Pornography - concerns about pornography use or other online behaviours
Male sexual pain - pain due to tightness of the foreskin (phimosis) or infection (balanitis). An inflamed prostate gland can lead to pain (prostatitis) and contractions in pelvic floor muscles can lead to pain and problems with erection and ejaculation.
Female sexual pain - pain during intercourse can be caused by involuntary tightening of muscles in the pelvic floor (vaginisus) or more generalised pain during intercourse (dyspareunia). Touching the outside of the vagina can be painful (vulvodynia). Low lubrication in the vagina (in menopause) can lead to friction and pain during intercourse. Conditions like endometriosis can lead to pain during sexual activity.
Female orgasm - problems with having an orgasm, reaching an orgasm and having the desired intensity.
Menopause - female hormones have a big impact on sexual function, including changes in the vagina and changes in sexual desire and how this impacts a relationship
Low sexual desire - loss of desire or issues with arousal, pleasure and sexual interest
Medical - impact on sexual function of conditions like diabetes, obesity, cancer and endometriosis. Impact on sexual function of medications like anti-depressants.
Couples sex therapy
I can work with couples on sexual issues that might be impacting their relationship including:
Intimacy - issues with communication, physical touch, working with emotions, vulnerability and boundaries
Sexual desire - mismatches in desire between the parties, loss of desire, or problems with arousal and expectations
Sexual interest - how changing sexual interests might impact the relationship: erotica, kink, fantasy and pornography
Children - how the relationship is impacted by childbirth or the presence of young children. This can include physical or postpartum changes that might affect sex or hormonal changes including perimenopause and early menopause.
Age - how sex changes as you get older, the impact of menopause on the relationship, concerns about erection performance, changes in sexual desire, sexual pain with or without penetration
I ask that couples commit to at least 6 sessions of therapy in order to be able to make sense of the underlying issues.
